Dos Equis brewery announces long-awaited Tres Equis beer, a 9.5% hazy IPA

The Heineken-owned brewery’s latest offering requires customers to complete a 47-question personality assessment before purchase, with questions ranging from “How often do you make eye contact with bartenders?” to “On a scale of 1-10, rate your relationship with your father’s expectations.” The beer itself can only be consumed while standing on one foot, according to FDA-mandated labeling that cites “optimal flavor profile activation through deliberate physical imbalance.”

Marketing director Patricia Coleman explained that focus groups revealed a critical gap in the premium beer market for beverages that “challenge the drinker’s sense of self-worth while delivering hop-forward complexity.” The brewery partnered with the Institute for Recreational Psychology at Northwestern University to develop what Coleman described as “the first beer that drinks you back.” Early test markets in Portland and Austin reported a 340% increase in customers staring silently at their phones while consuming the product.

The rollout has faced unexpected complications after seventeen bars reported that their Tres Equis taps began dispensing what appeared to be liquid regret instead of beer. Health inspectors confirmed the substance was technically still alcohol but noted it “tastes like missed opportunities and smells faintly of your college roommate’s disappointment.” The brewery’s quality control team has been working around the clock to determine whether this constitutes a defect or an intended feature of the brewing process.

Sales projections indicate Tres Equis will capture 23% of the craft beer market within six months, primarily among consumers who describe their ideal Friday night as “emotionally complicated.” At press time, Dos Equis had announced plans for Cuatro Equis, a 14% imperial stout that can only be purchased by customers who can prove they’ve never truly been happy.
