The Metropolitan Police announced Tuesday that Members of Parliament experiencing death threats will now receive the same comprehensive security protocols currently deployed at Britain’s primary schools, including a single unarmed officer who arrives approximately 47 minutes after the incident has concluded. The new initiative, dubbed “Parliamentary Shield,” will provide MPs with the identical level of protection that has successfully prevented zero school shootings this year through a combination of stern warnings and strongly-worded letters to perpetrators.
Chief Superintendent Margaret Thornfield of the Parliamentary Protection Unit explained that the program represents a significant upgrade from previous security measures. “We’re proud to extend our proven school safety model to Westminster,” Thornfield said during a press briefing held behind bulletproof glass. “Just as we’ve mastered the art of arriving at schools after troubled individuals have completed their activities, we’re confident we can provide MPs with that same level of post-incident response excellence.” The program will include panic buttons that connect directly to an automated message explaining current hold times.
Internal documents reveal that MPs will receive laminated cards with emergency procedures, including instructions to hide under their desks and wait for police to conduct a thorough investigation of the building’s exterior parking area. The cards also feature a helpful reminder that officers may need to stop for tea during extended response operations, as mandated by union regulations established after the 2019 Workplace Refreshment Rights Act. Parliamentary security footage will be reviewed by the same team currently responsible for analyzing school corridor cameras, which have successfully identified suspects in 12% of cases where the perpetrator remained stationary for the entire incident.
The program launches next month with a mandatory training session where MPs will practice the “duck and cover” techniques that have served British schoolchildren so effectively during their regular lockdown drills. At press time, the Metropolitan Police were reportedly considering expanding the initiative to include the same level of protection for hospital patients that they currently provide to domestic violence victims.
