New SXSW Event Lets Attendees Dispose of Free Stuff Directly Into Lady Bird Lake

The South by Southwest Music Conference unveiled its newest sustainability initiative Tuesday, installing a series of pneumatic disposal chutes that transport unwanted promotional items directly from the Austin Convention Center into Lady Bird Lake at a rate of 47 branded tote bags per minute. Festival organizers report the system has already processed over 12,000 stress balls, 8,500 branded USB drives, and an estimated 23 tons of stickers bearing the logos of defunct cryptocurrency startups since opening day.

The program emerged from a joint task force between SXSW and the Austin Department of Aquatic Resource Management, which determined that traditional disposal methods were creating dangerous bottlenecks in downtown dumpsters. Environmental compliance officer Janet Morrison explained the lake-dumping protocol represents “a more efficient allocation of waste streams that eliminates the middleman while supporting local marine ecosystems through increased substrate diversity.” The chutes operate on a sophisticated sorting mechanism that separates items by material density, ensuring heavier promotional items sink to designated zones on the lake floor.

Early adopters have praised the convenience of the disposal system, with several attendees forming orderly queues to jettison armfuls of branded merchandise they collected within minutes of entering exhibition halls. The lake’s fish population has reportedly adapted to the influx by developing what marine biologists describe as “logo recognition behaviors,” with bass now actively seeking out items bearing QR codes and several species of catfish showing preference for promotional materials printed in specific Pantone colors.

City officials noted that water clarity has improved dramatically since the launch, as the accumulated promotional materials have created an effective filtration layer across the lake bottom that traps sediment and organic matter. At press time, SXSW announced plans to expand the program next year with dedicated chutes for branded apparel and a high-capacity pneumatic system capable of disposing of entire promotional vehicles directly into the lake’s deeper channels.
